Many people in the world, including most New Zealanders, know very little about the Kiwi. We have made this website to help inform people about them and also to tell people that the Kiwi is in danger of extinction.

When the Maori first came to New Zealand, there were about 12 million Kiwis (more), but today there are less than 50,000 and the kiwi population is under threat from introduced animals and mankind (more).
The biggest threat is the stoat.

A Stoat Aproaching An Egg

The kiwi is found only in New Zealand (more). There are four different species but six different varieties (more).
The Kiwi is one of the world's most unusual animals
(more). It produces an egg that is so huge it almost fills the Kiwis entire body (more), and although it is a bird, in many ways it has more similarities to a mammal.
