Searching For a Domain Name
In order to have a domain name you must first check to see that it isn't already registered to somebody. There are many sites on the internet that allow you to do this, but a local one that we would recommend is www.freeparking.co.nz
At this stage you have to decide whether you want your domain name to end in .co.nz , or the more international .com. It will be a lot harder for you to find an available .com name than it will be to find a .co.nz, but it is a question of how you want your business to be perceived.
The right name can also help your site to obtain higher search engine rankings.

Domain Name Costs
Currently www.freeparking.co.nz is charging $NZ 39.95 + GST to register a .nz name, and $NZ49.95 + GST to register a .com name. These are annual fees.

Domain Name Guidelines
A domain name can be up to 26 characters long, including the suffix e.g. .co.nz, .com, .net, .org etc. You can use numbers, letters, and hyphens in your domain name, but you cannot start or end the name with a hyphen. Special characters like the underscore ( _ ), the explanation mark ( ! ), or the at sign ( @ ) are not permitted. Domain names are not case sensitive i.e. capital letters are not recognized as being different to lower case letters.

Once a name is registered it is a long, tedious process to make any changes you may require so be careful when completing the application form.
