These are the same questions I asked myself
before I built my original site, and the answer is, of
course you can, I did. But now I can honestly say, in
hindsight, that building your own site to save money is
definitely a mistake.
I estimate that my first site took me close to 200 hours
to complete, much of that was spent searching for
tutorials and programmes, learning how to operate them,
and generally fixing a lot of mistakes.
Five years ago when I started getting quotes for building
my site, the web design world was very different to what
it is today. The few firms that were in existence charged
rates far beyond the reach of a small business operator.
Today there are more design firms like Kamcom in
existence, who are reasonably priced. Kamcom would charge
between $300 to $400 to build my original site, which
means my 200 hours works out at $2 per hour. I'm sure
looking at it that way most business owners would agree
that their time could be better spent doing something
else.
Another option is to get a gifted amateur to build the
site. The neighbours son may have built a brilliant
Pokemon web site, but would you trust him to take an
empty shop, decorate it, sign write it, plan the layout
and then leave him in sole charge of the business? Just
as in the bricks and mortar business world you are judged
on your location, signwriting, window display (indeed
even the cleanliness of your windows), your store layout,
product presentation, and how friendly and efficient your
staff are, online you are judged on appearance,
usability, down load speed, and navigation. If it's done
wrong your website could actually drive away more
customers than it attracts.
There are ways of saving yourself some
money, searching for links to improve your site
popularity is a good example, as is providing all the
necessary text and the photos for your site. At Kamcom I
enjoy working in with the owner or the staff of a
business, and am more than happy to give advice on what
parts of the project they can tackle. I can also train
you or a member of you staff to make simple changes to
the website, enabling you to keep it current at no
further cost.
