There are a multitude of flashy toys out there that you can add to a website. Although they all look cool, their use is often a mistake made by amateur web designers when building a site. |

What are these flashy toys? They are the Javascript, Flash, Shockwave, animations, audio clips, and streaming videos that are not part of the basic HTML language. The things that jump out at you when you enter a site. The things that everyone wants on their site but not on any of the sites they visit. They can add flair, interactivity, and excitement to your site but in many cases will make it look amateurish, slow loading, and hard to navigate. Remember all the times you've waited for a Flash web page to load up just to have it say "Welcome to our site, Click here to enter", or the incredibly slow loading page that plays annoying music while you browse? Some bells and whistles do have a place on a good site, and enhance it. A drop down navigation menu, a product video, or a site search engine are all good examples of useful add-ons. If you insist on using complicated bells and whistles on your site at least give your audience the option to partake, tell them before they click on a link what treat you have install for them e.g. "Click here to hear my favourite music" When your site is completed use a programme like Net Mechanic or Web Garage to check your download time. Remember the magic web designers' rule of "more than 8 seconds download time is too much". Ask friends, real friends, for their honest opinion of your site. Is it hard to navigate, does it have too long a download time, or annoying music? Do those cool visual effects annoy the hell out of them? Finally take a good long hard look at your site. Do all those fancy add-ons help in any way to deliver whatever message you're trying to impart? Or do they add absolutely nothing but a distraction to the viewer? This article was written by
