- Search
Engines
These are a good source of targeted traffic.
People are searching for a particular product or
service when they find you this way.
Submit your website to all the popular search
engines, and any local or specialised ones that
you feel could be helpful.
- Directories
These are the same as the search engines. Worth
the effort of registering your site with them.
- Cards
and Stationary
Put your URL on all your stationary, envelopes,
advertising, business cards, and vehicles.
- Referrals
These are probably the best source of traffic you
can get. By including a link on your site
allowing your visitors to tell a friend about it,
you not only attract potential customers to your
site but it is recommended by someone they
actually know.
- Solicited
Links
By getting links from other sites you can gain
targeted visitors. Link to similar sites to your
own so that you know your visitors will be
interested in your product.
When someone sees your link on another site they
gain the subconscious belief that the site owners
are endorsing your site and your product.
These links are also helpful in boosting your
search engine rankings.
- Direct
E-mail
This is a questionable method. There's no doubt
that it gets result, if you target your campaign.
Make certain the recipients will be interested in
your message; otherwise you could be accused of
Spamming. The worst case scenario would be that
your ISP and web site host will discontinue your
service.
Send e-mails advertising new products, sales etc
to existing customers, and ask them to recommend
you to their friends. Collect e-mail addresses
from those visiting your site, perhaps even
consider starting a newsletter.
- Signature
File
At the bottom of every email you send, for what
ever reason, you should attach a signature file
containing your URL.
If you're not sure how to do this, look in the
help section of your e-mail programme.
Other methods to consider are
on-line magazines, classified adds, bulletin boards, and
news groups. All these would appear to have only a
limited result, but try them and find out for yourself.
If anyone has a good idea for free web site promotion,
please email me so I can include it in this article, with
a link back to your web site (see how easy free promotion
can be?)
